One of the worst kept secrets going in football is no longer a secret. Former Sevilla sporting director Monchi has arrived in Rome and has been officially announced as Roma’s new sporting director. Monchi’s contract with the Giallorossi is a 4-year contract, with an option for a 5th.
The Spaniard had a successful 17-year run at Sevilla, helping the club win numerous trophies. Sevilla has won 5 Europa League titles under Monchi, including the last three, and two Copa del Rey titles.
Monchi seems to have a knack for signing players for a cheap price and then reselling them for much more money. That is a great ability for your sporting director to have, however Roma fans are not concerned about the club making a profit. Although, in today’s day and age of financial fair play, having a fiscally smart sporting director is a huge plus. Nevertheless, Roma fans want to win a scudetto, they have come close over the past few seasons. The club seems to be moving forward as a whole. The talent on the field has been good, the club recently took a big step forward to getting their own, new stadium built, and now a new sporting director.
Monchi will have his work cut out for him from day one. Roma needs to work out new contracts with Radja Nainggolan and Kevin Strootman. If the capital club could hold on and finish in second place, guaranteeing themselves a place in the Champions League group stage, it may provide Monchi with more resources to work with. We all know the great job he did at Sevilla with less resources than what he figures to have available at Roma.
Monchi had the following words to say about his new position:
“I would like to thank Roma president Jim Pallotta and the club’s executive team for giving me this opportunity. This is an exciting project and I look forward to serving the supporters, staff, and players at this iconic club for many years to come.”
