Milan are working their way back to where they want to be. With their win over Bologna, Milan have secured themselves a place in Europe next season. No, it is not a place in the Champions League, where Milan has such a rich history. They will have to settle for a spot in the Europa League. Although, Milan fans should not feel like they are “settling” for the Europa League. Let’s be honest with each other, this current Milan squad is not Champions League caliber. They are no where near the the level of Juventus, Roma, and Napoli. The Europa League is a fair assessment of their current level. Next season will be Milan’s first season competing in Europe in three years.

Vincenzo Montella deserves a lot of credit for Milan’s season. Recently in an interview, Antonio Cassano destroyed this current Milan squad. He said something to the effect of; “Back in my day, none of these current Milan players would even be allowed to get dressed outside of Milanello”. Cassano also said Montella has had a bunch of “homeless” people to work with. If you believe Cassano, than a job well done by Montella. Milan’s season will be remembered for Berlusconi finally selling the club. A transition from one owner to another, something Montella had to deal with as well.

Milan will need to improve the talent on their roster if they want to be more competitive next year in Serie A and make a run in the Europa League. Many reports in Italy have them close to signing Atalanta’s Kessie and they have been linked to Wolfsburg’s Ricardo Rodriguez, Villarreal’s Mateo Musacchio, and Atalanta’s Andrea Conti. It seems that Milan wants to make Deulofeu’s move a permanent one, given how well he played since coming over in January.

Montolivo had the following words to say:

“Clearly we reached our objective, but Milan has to aim higher. I think that being back in Europe after [three] years is important for everyone.”

Romagnoli is excited about playing in Europe for the first time:

“I will play in Europe for the first time, let’s hope we do well. It was our objective from the beginning.”

Milan had to battle off Fiorentina and their city rivals Inter for this Europa League spot. Again, the Europa League is not where Milan and their fans ultimately want to be, but it is a step forward.
