Sometimes, it is hard to rekindle an old love. I’m here to tell you why this old love should be reunited. Of course, I’m talking about Milan and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Milan are working rapidly in the summer transfer market; already signing Mateo Musacchio, Franck Kessie, and Ricardo Rodriguez. They don’t appear to be done yet. Milan are looking to add a reliable goal scorer. They’ve been linked to Andrea Belotti, Alvaro Morata, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Diego Costa, and Nikola Kalinic. Even if Milan sign one of these strikers, adding Zlatan would still be a good move.
The Rossoneri’s roster is a relatively young one, with Riccardo Montolivo being their primary veteran. That isn’t a bad thing; this is a youth movement and a new era beginning at Milan. However, it would be beneficial for Milan to add a veteran presence and leader like Zlatan Ibrahimovic to their locker-room. The last time Milan were successful was when Ibrahimovic was on the roster. Milan were cash strapped and needed to sell players. They sold Thiago Silva to PSG and Zlatan, who was viewed almost like a throw-in player.
Zlatan is able to sign on a free transfer after being released by Manchester United. He is coming off an injury that will likely keep him sidelined until around January. So, essentially you are bringing in Zlatan for about 5 months of on-field work, but it is what he provides in the locker-room that is invaluable. There will be higher expectations on this new and improved Milan, which means more pressure on young individuals such as; Donnarumma, Romagnoli, Calabria, and Locatelli. Sometimes that pressure can affect a young player’s on-field production. Insert Zlatan. Zlatan would help absorb that pressure, be the leader, be the face, and take these young players under his wing.
Sure, Zlatan would not be a long term solution at Milan, but it would still be a big move and one that excites the fans. Ibrahimovic enjoyed his time at Milan and the fans loved him just as much. The veteran presence and leadership that Zlatan provides to a team can’t be overlooked. Zlatan may just be exactly what this young Milan team needs.
