The supermarket, a place where you go to buy what you need. Sometimes you find what you are looking for, sometimes you don’t. Sometimes you find great deals, sometimes you overpay.

Roma fought hard this past season and were able to edge out Napoli to finish in 2nd place. They will be competing in the Champions League next year, so surely they will look to bolster their roster. Right?

Roma have a new sporting director; Monchi. The Spaniard is regarded as one of the best sporting directors in the world, primarily for the success he had at Sevilla. So, if you are a Roma fan, there is reason to believe in Monchi. He said that Roma are not looking to sell their stars, they are not a “supermarket”.

Despite Monchi saying Roma will not sell their star players; they just sold Mohamed Salah to Liverpool. Roma will receive €42 million, plus €8 million in bonuses. Salah had a tremendous season with Roma and is a significant loss for them.

Zenit are also shopping at the Roma Supermarket. The player on their grocery list is 26-year old Greek defender Kostas Manolas. Roma’s price for Manolas is reportedly €40 million, while Zenit appear to only be willing to spend €30 million. The Italian media are reporting that Manolas has already agreed to terms with Zenit, which signals his openness to this potential move.

Manolas is not the only Roma defender on a team’s shopping list. Inter, now coached by Spalletti, are shopping at the Roma Supermarket too. The player on their grocery list is 25-year old German defender Antonio Rudiger. Inter have been linked to Rudiger for some time now, however, some of the talk has cooled off. Spalletti likes Rudiger because of his versatility to play in either a 3-man or 4-man defense. Rudiger is currently playing for the German National Team in the Confederations Cup, so when that tournament ends, talk between the sides could pick up again.

Roma’s young midfielder Leandro Paredes, is another player that could leave this summer. Roma received several offers for the Argentine last summer, but decided to keep him. Borussia Dortmund are a possible destination for him. Would be a promising midfield for Dortmund; Paredes and Pulisic. Zenit are also in on Paredes. Mario Rui, who spent most of the season injured, is being linked to Napoli. Mario Rui experienced some of his best football under Maurizio Sarri while at Empoli. Linking Rui to Napoli makes sense, given it would reunite him with Sarri.

With the sale of Salah, there is a need for a winger now. Sure, Di Francesco could look for El Shaarawy to step up more and give him more playing time. It is likely Monchi will go out and sign a new winger. Sassuolo’s Domenico Berardi is being linked to Roma. Sassuolo are asking for €50 million for their young star, Roma don’t appear willing to spend that much. Di Francesco knows Berardi well from their time together at Sassuolo, so Monchi may ask him just how much he really is worth.

Roma are reportedly close to signing a young, Sassuolo talent; Lorenzo Pellegrini. The Italian midfielder is one of the better young talents in Italy. Pellegrini is a former youth product, so the club is familiar with him. His arrival could coincide with Paredes’ exit.

Monchi declared that Roma are not a “supermarket”, yet several of their big name players are engaged in possible sales. Roma fans will be paying close attention this summer to see what Monchi does. Expectations are high, patience are thin, and the pressure is on. Monchi has to deliver.
