It is all official. Federico Bernardeschi is now a Juventus player. The young man from Carrara, Italy (same town Buffon is from) is the latest summer signing for the Bianconeri. Juventus will pay Fiorentina €40 million for the winger.
What started as a very quiet and slow transfer market for Juventus, has all of a sudden heated up. The Bianconeri signed Douglas Costa from Bayern Munich, followed by Wojciech Szczensny (to back up Buffon), and Mattia De Sciglio. Now you can add Bernardeschi to that, and Juve are having a solid mercato. Douglas Costa and Bernardeschi will add more fire power to Juve’s offense and give Allegri more options up front.
It is interesting to see Juventus opt to spend a large amount of money on another winger after already signing Douglas Costa, rather than on a big name defender. Yes, they did sign De Sciglio, but there are still some concerns over Juve’s defense after the departure of Bonucci.
Seeing Bernardeschi join Juventus comes as a surprise if you know all about the bad blood between Fiorentina and Juventus. Historically, La Viola despise selling their star players to Juventus. Just look at some recent players such as Juan Cuadrado and Stevan Jovetic. Fiorentina’s willingness to sell Bernardeschi to Juve magnifies the disconnect between the Della Valle family and the Fiorentina fans. The Della Valle family announced earlier this summer that they are looking to sell the club.
For Bernardeschi, joining Juventus has to be a dream come true. He goes from a club that are becoming dysfunctional, to one that are perennial favorites to win the scudetto. The Italian winger is only 23-years old and could become the face of Juventus, as the club transitions from some of their older, veteran players to a younger look over the next few seasons.
Federico Bernardeschi scored a career best 11 goals last season and played in 32 of the 38 league games for Fiorentina.
