“It has been a dreamlike summer”. Those are the words of Milan’s Vincenzo Montella in a recent interview with Gazzetta dello Sport. We all know Milan have made signing after signing after signing. With all these new signings, it has fans wondering what type of formation Milan will play with. Prior to signing Leonardo Bonucci, most assumed Milan would play with a 4-man defense. It was going to be Alessio Romagnoli and Mateo Musacchio playing in the middle of the defense.

All that changed once they signed Leonardo Bonucci. At Juventus, Bonucci played primarily in a 3-man defense, and did a great job. There’s been a lot of talk about Milan now playing with a 3-man defense: Romagnoli-Bonucci-Musacchio. If Montella wants his three big center-backs on the field together, this is his option. Montella appears to be open to playing with a 3-man defense:

If Montella opts to use a 3-5-2 formation (or some variation of it), he has the right type of full-backs: Ricardo Rodriguez and Andrea Conti. These are two of the games premier full-backs when it comes to aiding in attack and creating chances. Andrea Conti scored 8 goals last season, more than any other full-back in Europe’s top 5 leagues.

Montella is not locked into only using a 3-man or 4-man defense. He does have the players that give him the flexibility to change it up and match-up with the opponent. Montella said it himself:

“With these players we can play many formations. I’m spoiled.”
